Modeling wetland processes

Working Group Reports

Wetlands are present at several LTER sites, either as primary or secondary habitat. Modeling approaches can be applied to a variety of processes of interest to wetland scientists, including those in geomorphology, plant and animal ecology, and ecosystem ecology, but the specialized expertise needed to implement these modeling approaches is not present at all sites.

The goal of this working group is to publicize a range of wetland models that are in use at one LTER site and could be used at other sites, with the parallel goals of:

  1. Strengthening site science by providing new modeling tools to sites that lack them
  2. Encouraging cross site comparisons through using the same modeling tools at multiple sites

The session will consist of a series of presentations, with ample time for discussion. Each speaker will present the purpose and methods of a model, discuss the data and expertise needed to implement the model at a new site, discuss the potential for cross-site comparisons using the model, and field questions.

The desired outcomes of the session include:

  1. Sites would implement modeling approaches developed by other sites rather than reinventing the wheel
  2. We would identify opportunities for cross-site comparisons using particular models
