LTER and STREON synergies and opportunities: Next generation questions in stream ecological research

STREON (STReam Experimental and Observatory Network) is an experiment within NEON unprecedented in scope, which will address compelling questions related to basic stream ecological structure and function and the roles of nutrients and consumers. The experiment involves 10 streams arrayed across the continental U.S. and is designed to address how stream ecosystems respond to nutrient additions and the loss of large consumers. STREON will provide unique information on the consequences of these changes, and their interactions. Many of the STREON sites are located at or near LTER sites.  This offers a unique opportunity to link long term measures as well as propose new auxiliary experiments to answer important questions in stream ecology. Coordination with the stream ecological community and collaboration with other fields is needed to make the most of the data coming from this project.  In addition, the platform of STREON offers an opportunity for stream ecologists to define new and exciting questions and directions in their field.  The goal of this workshop will be to develop themes of research that would contribute to and benefit from the data products associated with STREON and to discuss development of research networks that would facilitate advancement of new ideas.
